Fall 2019 Pacific Speaker Series
Mark your calendars…the 2019 Pacific Speaker Series kicks off next week, featuring a line up of speakers addressing issues of concern to the Pacific Islands and Pacific Islanders. Specific information for each session will be distributed ahead of each scheduled event.
We continue to plan additional sessions for the series this semester. Please contact us if there are additional topics or speakers you’d like to see included in the series. The speaker series is brought to you by the Center for Pacific Islands Studies in partnership with the Department of History.
Welcome Dr. Monica C. LaBriola!
The center welcomes #CPISgraduate Dr. Monica C LaBriola back to the UH Mānoa (UHM) campus where she begins her appointment this semester as Assistant Professor of History! She joins the UHM Department of History as a Pacific History specialist. Prior to joining the department, she was Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oahu (UHWO) where she taught Pacific Islands, American, and world history. Her teaching at UHWO garnered the 2017 Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Dr. LaBriola’s teaching record also includes experience as a volunteer elementary and high school teacher in the Marshall Islands, and teaching as a Graduate Assistant and Lecturer in History and Pacific Islands Studies courses in the UH system. She holds a PhD in History from UHM, an MA in Pacific Islands Studies from CPIS, and a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. Welcome back to Mānoa, Monica!
Paul Lyons Scholarship
Call for applications from Ma students at UH Mānoa:
The Paul Lyons Scholarship benefits MA students at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa whose scholarship and research interests focus on the Literatures and Languages of Oceania (Pacific islands, including Hawai‘i and Aotearoa). No preference will be given to which degree program as long as the scholar’s academic focus is related to this purpose. Funds shall be used for costs associated with attendance (e.g. tuition, books, fees, etc.).
Awards: The selection committee will make 2 awards of $1,000 each for Fall 2019.
Deadline: Monday, September 9, 2019, by 4pm.

Eligibility: Recipients must be full-time or part-time graduate students pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
To apply: submit a letter of application of no more than 2 pages, a brief CV, and the names of two references. No support letters please. In your cover letter, please describe your research interest in the Literatures and/or Languages of Oceania (Pacific islands, including Hawai‘i and Aotearoa), and how you are pursuing it in your MA program. Your CV (no more than 2 pages) should list your academic history and relevant activities; course work in the MA program; TA assignments if any; presentations, awards, publications, or other achievements.

Save the date! Marshallese Education Day 2020 has been scheduled for April 4, 2020 on the UH Mānoa campus.
“Reflections from the #PalauFieldSchool2019: A Visual Essay”
More coverage on the recent Palau Field School…a visual essay with words by Talei Luscia Mangioni and images by Aveline Yang, Talei, and Katerina Teaiwa. The visual essay is featured on the new outrigger: oceanic stories, “…an online platform for emerging perspectives, research, and commentary on Oceania.” The website is a project of Mitiana Arbon and Bianca Hennessy, and supported by the Australian National University’s Pacific Institute.
