Service Learning is a pedagogical method that takes students out of the classroom and into communities to engage in subject content and interact with community members. It involves students exploring topics integral to course materials in the real world.
Service learning enables critical engagement with Pacific peoples in our communities and an opportunity for students to understand contemporary concerns and issues—whether regional, creative, or policy-driven—and at a personal, emotional, and not merely theoretical level. Students appreciate “issues” through their interactions with Pacific peoples. They gain important communication skills and cultural knowledge that creates greater levels of sensitivity to culturally appropriate ways of communicating and acting.
