Applications of artificial intelligence are ubiquitous in everyday life. Who doesn’t use a smartphone or a smartwatch? However, relatively few of us are actually familiar with how AI systems work. This talk will attempt to close this gap.

My aim is to offer an overview of ‘machine learning’ and ‘deep learning’. I will also consider the role of training, validation, and test sets in the context of artificial intelligence, and discuss problems that can occur while training a system. In my characterization of deep learning, which is a method of machine learning. I will list its characteristics, functionalities, and areas of application. This explanation will then enable us to distinguish between the terms ‘machine learning’ and ‘deep learning’. Notions which are often mentioned in the same breath as AI.

Tobias is a visiting Ph.D. Candidate at UH Mānoa from the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU). He is working on the ethical & technical potential & limitations of the use of AI systems in the military context.
