UHM Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education

In 1987, Dr. Thomas Jackson was hired by the department as a full-time Specialist and Director of the Philosophy in the Schools project. The program was a joint effort between the Department of Philosophy and the Hawai‘i Department of Education. For 15 years, the DOE funded philosophy department graduate students who worked in public school classrooms throughout the state of Hawai‘i, assisting teachers in developing intellectually safe classroom communities of inquiry.  Dr. Jackson, having been inspired by Matthew Lipman’s approach to “Philosophy for Children” (p4c), brought elements of Lipman’s project to this one. The demand for p4c in Hawai‘i has grown substantially over the years. Thanks to the generous support of the Uehiro Foundation and in order to meet the growing demand for p4c, the Philosophy in the Schools project has been supplanted by the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education (click here for more information).
