Guided Reading is reading by students. It provides the opportunity for the teacher to work with small groups of students (3 to 5 children) on books that present a successful challenge for them. The teacher closely observes and monitors the ways in which students process print and the reading strategies they use.

Guided reading:

  • Ensures that students read a new text successfully.
  • Helps students develop positive attitudes towards reading.
  • Provides an opportunity for students to develop and practice reading strategies necessary to reading independently.
  • Allows teachers to observe students while they process unfamiliar texts.
  • Gives teachers and students an opportunity to explore the features of the language used in a variety of texts.
  • Allows teachers to group and re-group students according to interest, experiences, and ability.
  • Has the goal of finding a text that students can read successfully, but that includes a number of challenges to "stretch" the students a little.
