• Sustained Silent Reading, commonly called SSR, is a time when everyone in the classroom, including teachers, sit quietly to read books of their choice for a designated time period.
  • In lower elementary classrooms, SSR may last for only ten minutes, while in upper elementary classrooms, SSR lasts for as long as 20 minutes.
  • SSR is a way for students to establish the habit of reading every day, as well as developing their own opinions and preferences as readers.
  • SSR is most effective when students are encouraged to talk about the books that they are reading with their peers, in both partner and whole class settings.
  • This environment works towards building a community of readers.
