Purpose:

  • To improve the quality of education for the students of the Waianae Coast of Oahu, Hawai'i

Challenges:

  • An exceptionally high rate of teacher turnover
  • An absence of role models, specifically, Native Hawaiian teachers from the community
  • An absence of culturally-responsive instructional approaches

Goals: To prepare

  • Teachers to form a stable core of faculty at the various Coast schools
  • Teachers, specifically Native Hawaiians from the community, to serve as role models
  • Teachers to provide culturally-responsive instruction aimed at improving children's achivement
  • Educator's with advanced degrees for careers in adminstration, curriculum development, teacher education and applied research
