The Empty Pot
Lesson by: Germaine Nae`ole
Materials: book (The Empty Pot), markers, and chart
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to share a new text with
the children. The children will be able to make predictions on the text,
listen to the text being read, and discuss the text (before, during,
and after the text).
Objectives:
Students will be able to:

Predict what will happen in the text Discuss different
text elements (cover, author, beginning, middle, end, title page,
etc...)

Listen to the text being read to them
-
Re-tell the story in sequence after the text has been
read

Discover the meaning of honesty, determination, and
courage
Procedures:
- Focusing Event
The students will be able to view a "picture walk" of the
book and anticipate the outcome of the text.
- Introducing the text
- Who can tell me the title of the book?
- Who can tell me what the author's name is?
- Where do you think this story is from? (What country or culture?)
- How do you know that this book is from that place or people?
- Do you think this will be a true story?
- Think about the title of the book. Why do you think it is called that?
- What do you think the book will tell us about the boy and his pot?
- Instructions: When I am reading the book to you focus on the beautiful,
colorful pictures, and notice how all the pictures coincide with the
words on the page.
- Read the text!
- Discussion (after the reading)
- So, what was the book about? (ask leading questions to help the students
piece the story together)
- What happened in the beginning, middle, and ending? (answers will
be written on chart paper labeling each part)
- What lesson did you learn from the main character (Ping)?
- Why is this lesson important to you?
Extensions:
- Art (produce a flip book about the text)
- Writing (the children can write about their favorite part, favorite
character, what they learned from the main character, etc...)
Assessment: The children will be able to join in a discussion
about the story with the entire class and in small groups.
