Writers have certain needs in order to be interested and productive in writing:
  • Writers need adequate amount of time to write
  • Writers need to be able to choose their own topics
  • Writers need response to help improve their writing
  • Writers learn mechanics in context
  • Writers need to know adults who write for role models
  • Writers need to read to gain an understanding if various writing styles
  • Writers need to feel safe to take risks
  • Writers need a genuine purpose for writing

Setting up a writing program that makes students feel good about themselves as writers as well as producing quality work is a challenge. However, a well organized, predictable environment can help teachers to meet that challenge. There are seven steps included in the writing process in which students can move back and forth through.

In Ka Lama, each student teacher has the opportunity to learn the steps of the writing process. Click here to veiw some examples of student teachers' storybooks after going through the writing process.
