Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi Managing Editor
The managing editor is responsible for assuring communication between the different desks and the coordination of copy flow. The managing editor decides what runs in the newspaper if the editor in chief is not present. Duties of the managing editor include editing stories on deadline, thinking of story ideas and writing articles for multiple desks, handling the newspaper’s payroll, and assigning pages to the different desk editors for each issue. The managing editor should help recruit and interview applicants for staff positions, train staff members, organize workshops, read other college newspapers for suitable stories if needed, and plan and arrange for photos and graphics, including charts, maps and logos. The managing editor should be able to schedule at least 10 office hours a week in addition to time researching and writing articles. Applicants must have a strong ethic, good reading and writing skills and a solid grasp of grammar. Applicants must be able to get along and work with many diverse personalities.

Credit Requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
$45 per issue, $10 per article

Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi Associate Features Editor
The Ka Leo associate features editor is responsible for assisting the features editor with filling assigned pages for each issue with the highest quality content possible. Duties of the associate features editor include writing and editing articles, thinking of story ideas, assigning stories to writers, working with writers to make sure deadlines are met, and providing useful feedback on ways the article could be improved. If something in an article isn’t clear or doesn’t seem accurate, the associate opinions editor may be asked to contact the writer to verify the information. Other duties could include training writers, keeping track of payroll and expenses, responding to emails and answering phone calls. The associate features editor should be able to schedule at least five office hours each week, in addition to time researching, writing and editing articles. Applicants must have a strong ethic, good reading and writing skills and a solid grasp of grammar. Applicants must be able to get along and work with many diverse personalities.

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
$20 per issue, $10 per article

Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi Video Editor
The Ka Leo video editor is responsible for shooting and editing videos to post on Ka Leo’s website. Duties of the video editor include shooting events and breaking news, editing footage into a video package, writing scripts that tell an engaging and informative news story and providing voice over for the video package. Applicant should have experience using a video camera and editing video using a computer editing program. Applicant should be able to work with many different personalities and help recruit other members to the Ka Leo video team. Enrollment in or completion of Journalism 302 is preferred.

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
$25 per video posted on web site

ʻi Advertising Representatives
Advertising Representatives (ARs) are responsible for generating maximum sales from potential and existing advertisers, prospecting new clients, providing superior customer service to advertisers and achieving weekly and monthly sales goals. The AR works with the production department to create and design effective advertisements to meet the needs of our advertisers. ARs are also responsible for meeting all deadlines and completing other related activities as necessary, including paperwork and attending sales meetings. ARs are responsible for managing their time effectively and productively, coordinating all advertising materials, maintaining relationships with advertisers and keeping up-to-date records for all business transactions. Each AR is responsible for quoting rates, assuring that credit has been established or payment has been received prior to publication, meeting all deadlines and assuring that each client sees and approves a proof of their ad before it appears in the paper.

ARs are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week with at least five regularly scheduled office hours per week. The remaining work hours should be spent planning, preparing for and making sales calls in person at the advertiser’s place of business. ARs must possess excellent communication skills and be able to accurately present marketing information for use in decision-making, write effective sales letters and follow up after sales calls. ARs must be able to perform job responsibilities in a mature, professional manner. ARs must possess a positive attitude, superb customer service skills and a desire to work in advertising sales.

ARs must have an energetic personality to establish rapport with accounts. ARs must be able to identify false or misleading advertising. Above all else, ARs must be highly motivated and accountable!

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay begins at $100 base stipend per month, plus up to 10% commission on all opportunities for individual and staff bonuses and advancement.

Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi Graphic Designers
At Ka Leo O Hawai`i the Advertising Graphic Designer's primary responsibility is to create print advertisements that meet specific customers' needs while appealing to the UH Manoa campus and community. The Designers work closely with the Advertising sales team to design attractive campaigns that complement the client's vision and exceed their expectations. They also work closely with the Ad Manager and Business Office to design flyers, promotional materials, forms and documents for the department. Designers are knowledgeable in creative techniques, tools, and principles involved in marketing and consumer psychology and are experts at thinking outside the box! Graphic Designers are also responsible for page layout and production of each publication
of Ka Leo, including file setup and positioning of all advertisements and any advertising supplements or sections. Graphic Designers facilitate the production process by meeting all deadlines and maintaining excellent communication with the Ad Manager and sales team to ensure a smooth production flow.

Designers are responsible for managing their time effectively and productively, coordinating all production requests and materials, maintaining effective communication with the sales team, facilitating ad proofs, revisions, and approvals, maintaining a strict filesaving protocol, verifying proper sizing of each advertisement, and assuring that each advertisement is formatted for optimum print quality. Designers are expected to work a set schedule of 8 - 12 hours per week to ensure deadlines are met and design requests are promptly attended to. They are often expected to create
advertisements with a very short turnaround time, so ability to work efficiently under pressure is crucial.

Designers must possess high levels of creativity, excellent time management skills, and sharp attention to detail, while performing job responsibilities in a mature, professional manner. They must be proficient in InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and other design applications, and be able to take direction and follow all office procedures. Designers must possess excellent proofing skills including spelling and grammar, and they must be familiar with digital imaging equipment such as scanners and digital cameras. Above all else, Designers must be dedicated with a willingness
to learn!

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay up to $350 base stipend per month
