Ka Lamakua Content Creators

The Content Creator is responsible for providing the content that is the “heart and soul” of Ka Lamakua. Making use of either visual, audio, or written media the Content Creator is expected to effectively share their own work or highlight the works of others with the audience of Ka Lamakua.

Familiarity with the use of Wordpress or other web based programs to upload content to the Internet is helpful. However assistance, if needed, will be provided by the Managing Editor if necessary. Overall, applicants should be those with a passion for the creative arts and feel the need to share that passion with a wider audience.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Create the content that goes onto the website of Ka Lamakua, such as writings, photographs, recordings, etc.
  • Work with editors to ensure that the best quality of content is being shared.
  • When writing informative articles applying the style of Ka Lamakua.
  • When conveying information as facts, being sure that the information is accurate.
  • Participate in weekly production meetings by suggesting ideas for new content or asking for suggestions from other members of the staff.
  • Being able to commit to a set deadline when submitting content.

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay up to $100.00 per month based on a specific number of contributions determined by the EIC.

Ka Lamakua Copy Editor


The Copy Editor is responsible for maintaining the correct grammar and appropriate style of content for Ka Lamakua. The position is in effect for one semester, pending a performance review at the end of the first semester that could result in the position continuing further. He or she, along with the Editor in Chief, will create a style sheet for all content to adhere to when appearing in Ka Lamakua. The Copy Editor assures that all content made for Ka Lamakua follows the appropriate this style, when needed make corrections according to style and accepted grammar.

The Copy Editor must have a thorough command of computer skills, including word processing, copy-editing, and a familiarity with web production. Training in any of the above areas will be provided by the Managing Editor if necessary. In addition, the Copy Editor must show good organizational and communication skills, including the ability to coordinate workflow and make timely corrections that do not interfere with the intended voice of the content creator.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief to come up with an appropriate style sheet for Ka Lamakua publications.
  • Improve the formatting, style, and accuracy according to the agreed upon style sheet.
  • Inform content creators of Ka Lamakua’s accepted style.
  • Report mistakes and make corrections
  • Participate in weekly production meetings and assist the Editor-in-Chief, when necessary, in adjusting the style sheet according to new developments as they occur.
  • Answer email and phone messages addressed to the Copy Desk.

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay up to $300 base stipend per month based on a specific number of contributions determined by the EIC.

Ka Lamakua Visual Content Editor
The Visual Content Editor ensures that all formats of visual media, such as static media (i.e. photos, digital prints, etc) and dynamic (i.e. video, slideshows, etc), that are uploaded by content creators are properly formatted for viewing on the website.
  • should have experience using programs such as Adobe Photoshop when edits or unique images are needed for a post.
  • be willing to work with EIC to come up with a visual style guide for the website, and communicate this to the rest of the staff.
  • have a "keen eye" for what makes a quality visual stand out.
  • be willing to participate in weekly staff meetings regarding the website.

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay up to $300 base stipend per month based on a specific number of contributions determined by the EIC.

Ka Lamakua Advertising Representatives
Advertising Representatives (ARs) are responsible for generating maximum sales from potential and existing advertisers, prospecting new clients, providing superior customer service to advertisers and achieving weekly and monthly sales goals. The AR works with the production department to create and design effective advertisements to meet the needs of our advertisers. ARs are also responsible for meeting all deadlines and completing other related activities as necessary, including paperwork and attending sales meetings. ARs are responsible for managing their time effectively and productively, coordinating all advertising materials, maintaining relationships with advertisers and keeping up-to-date records for all business transactions. Each AR is responsible for quoting rates, assuring that credit has been established or payment has been received prior to publication, meeting all deadlines and assuring that each client sees and approves a proof of their ad before it appears in the paper.

ARs are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week with at least five regularly scheduled office hours per week. The remaining work hours should be spent planning, preparing for and making sales calls in person at the advertiser’s place of business. ARs must possess excellent communication skills and be able to accurately present marketing information for use in decision-making, write effective sales letters and follow up after sales calls. ARs must be able to perform job responsibilities in a mature, professional manner. ARs must possess a positive attitude, superb customer service skills and a desire to work in advertising sales.

ARs must have an energetic personality to establish rapport with accounts. ARs must be able to identify false or misleading advertising. Above all else, ARs must be highly motivated and accountable!

Credit requirement:
Minimum of four credits for graduate students and six credits for undergraduate students.

Stipend:
Starting pay begins at $100 base stipend per month, plus up to 10% commission on all opportunities for individual and staff bonuses and advancement.
