Mini-Unit by Wendy Miyasato Overview of the mini-unit: -All activities and learning experiences will follow and organized sequence of events, beginning with the introductory focusing event (KWL). -A notetaking exercise (facts of the ti plant) will follow. -Cooperative learning group research and presentations on uses of the ti leaf will be done next. -A hands-on activity making ti leaf lei will be facilitated by the teacher. -A culminating lesson using a read-aloud, KWL, a sing-along (related to uses of the ti leaf), and presentation of ti leaf lei to students will be the finale of this Hawaiian Studies mini-unit. Why teach this mini-unit? One of the main reasons why I am teaching the uses of the ti plant to my students is that I want them to gain a deeper understanding of the Hawaiian culture. Since most of my students are natives of Hawai'i, I think it is important for them to learn more about their culture. This mini-unit is important to these students because I want them to appreciate and take better care of their natural resources. I want my students to realize that our materialistic world shouldn't be valued as much and using natural resources can be just as effective. It may also help students realize that everything they own or have around them should be valued and taken care of. Click on the lessons below to view:
