Overall generalizations of Hawaiian Myths and Legends

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to make generalizations of the Hawaiian myths and legends that they have been introduced to along with the tales and fables they have been reading.
  • Students will be able to understand the Hawaiian culture and their style of writing.

Materials:

  • Chart Paper
  • Pen

Procedures:

  1. Discuss with students that we have been reading many different types of stories and begin asking what they all have in common. Begin writing their responses on the chart paper.
  2. Ask them what differences do they see?
  3. Discuss and ask for examples from the students.
  4. Ask them to make an overall generalization about all of these stories?
  5. What have they learned about the Hawaiian culture?
  6. What have they learned about the different styles of writing?
  7. Are these stories useful to use in real life? How?
  8. Conclude by going over the similarities and differences between the stories that they read.

Assessment:
Students oral responses and participation during the discussion.

Their understanding and comprehension on the purpose of the mini-unit.

Extension:
When there is more time allotted, have students write their own short Hawaiian myths using the writing process. Once they have completed their published pieces, have them participate in author's chair. They can either share their stories with the class or with another class.
