Hawaiian Myths and Legends Mini Unit Lesson 1

Introductory Focusing Event: Read Aloud Maui and the Secret of Fire

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to comprehend the Hawaiian Myth read to them and discuss the elements in the story.
  • Students will be able to make generalizations with other types of stories such as fables, myths, and legends.

Materials:

  • Book - Maui and the Secret of Fire
  • Chart Paper

Procedure:

  1. Discuss story elements such as:
  • Characters and their descriptions
  • Problem
  • Main Events
  • Solution to the problem
  • Message they gained from the story - What was the myth/legend trying to tell us? Did you learn anything from the story?
  • Wisdom Statement - How can they use this in their own life?
  • Universal Concept - What was the cause and effect in this story?
  1. Introduce the story Maui and the Secret of Fire.
  2. Explain that you will be reading this story and they need to pay attention and listen carefully.
  3. Read the story aloud.
  4. Then discuss how this story is similar to the stories they have read.
  5. Discuss how this story is different, what elements are different.
  6. Make overall generalizations between this myth and other stories they have read. Explain that next time they will be in their groups for Reader's Workshop and they will be reading a Hawaiian myth.

Extentions:
Next class period, students will be in their groups and they will read an assigned Hawaiian Myth or Legend. They will complete a story matrix and discuss the elements in small groups.
