We Search for Peace

January 11 – February 5, 2023

THE COMMONS GALLERY, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Commons Gallery is proud to present We Search for Peace. This is an exhibition of new work presented by the first and second year MFA students in the Department of Art & Art History: Enrico Battan, Rosie Connelly, Caroline Holmes, Mari Matsuda, Hala Megahy, Katharena Rentumis, Hiroko Sakurai, and Erik Sullivan.

"We search for peace, even as war wages and militarism poisons the waters of this island. Nuclear stockpiles continue unabated, gun violence overtakes car crashes as the leading cause of death of children in the United States, assault behind the closed doors of family homes escalates during a pandemic, angry authoritarians stir up racial hatred, and we make art. As artists, we believe in creating, making, and holding connections in a troubled world. People have always done this, adding a bit of ornament as a sign of human presence in a chaotic universe. Will peace prevail on earth? We search for that possibility. We make art."
