Erin Marquez’s sculptures are highlighted as part of an expanded arts partnership of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the Halekulani and its sister hotel, the Waikiki Parc.
Erin Marquez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus in sculpture in May 2015 from the Dept. of Art + Art History, UHM. Born and raised on O‘ahu, Marquez grew up in an environment surrounded by nature and animals. She started drawing at a young age and continues to incorporate 2D work into her artistic practice. Marquez states, “My work is greatly influenced by my passion for animals. Having had a childhood filled with many animals, I am fascinated by their presence. My observations have led me to believe there is a balance between intellect and the physical. The power, movement, and personality of each animal is unique. Capturing these mannerisms and gestures has become my obsession. Using gesture, each piece is given a presence. I strive to communicate the wild nature all animals possess. I hope to reveal their uncomplicated, raw beauty as I see it.”
Marquez’s recent group exhibitions include Contact 2015, (a juried exhibition, Honolulu Museum of Art School); Animaux Atelier, 2015, (Kissaten Café, Honolulu); and the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition, 2014, (Honolulu Museum of Art School). The Art Renewal Center (ARC), an online museum, listed Marquez as an International ARC Salon Finalist, 2014–2015, in the animal category. She was named Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Sculpture, 2015, and received the David H. and Doris C. Cromwell Award for excellence in figurative sculpture, 2014, from the Dept. of Art + Art History, UHM.
For the second time in this series of up-and-coming young artists’ exhibitions at the Waikiki Parc, guitarist Aaron Cardenas will provide music at the opening reception. Cardenas received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Dept. of Music, UHM, 2015, and will attend graduate school this fall. He has studied with guitar virtuosos Benjamin Verdery, Frederic Hand, Carlos Barbosa Lima, and the Brazilian Guitar Duo’s Douglas Lora and João Luiz. The recipient of a full scholarship in 2013, Cardenas attended a ten day master class with Benjamin Verdery, professor at Yale University, and was one of a few selected to perform a solo recital. He has been teaching and performing professionally since he was sixteen
