The Visual Resources Center (VRC) at the Department of Art and Art History and the UHM Jean Charlot Collection have collaborated to contribute over 300 images of artworks by Jean Charlot (1898-1979) via ARTstor. Now high quality images from the Jean Charlot Collection are part of 2 million images that you can download for educational purposes through the ARTstor Digital Library, among other images by the world’s leading museums.
Jean Charlot (born in Paris; died in Honolulu), a former faculty member of the Department of Art and Art History at UHM, was a prolific artist, art historian, author and poet, widely known for his fresco murals. His works were strongly influenced by the places he lived – France, Mexico, New York, Georgia, Colorado, Fiji and Hawai’i – and the indigenous and working peoples of these places.
The new images from the Jean Charlot Collection include his murals on UHM campus as well as ones throughout Honolulu and on the neighbor islands. There also are images of his drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures, illustrations, cartoons and photographs.
