Manoa’s Meritorious Teachers

John Rieder
Department of English
A professor of English, John Rieder places questions and questioning at the heart of his teaching. His goal is not to bring students to the "right" answers, but rather to turn them into the questioners.
He is able to bring Greek tragedy, romantic poetry, science fiction, American cinema and local literature side by side with canonical literary criticism, Marxism, structuralism and gender studies. Rieder encourages students to look beyond English literary theory and to consider viewing literature through the lens of other disciplines.
A student writes, "Close to nothing he taught was ordinary."
The University of Hawaii at Manoa Chancellor’s Citation for Meritorious Teaching recognizes Manoa faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning.
