Math+Science+x Seminar: Aina-Based Citizen Science and Stewardship

Dr. Healani Chang and Narrissa Spies will discuss “ʻAina-Based Citizen Science and Stewardship at Marae O Kalaeloa” at the April 15 Math+Science+x Seminar sponsored by the UH West Oʻahu Math and Science departments. Chang and Spies will discuss the goal of the ʻIlima Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at the University of Hawaiʻi, which is to increase the pipeline of science majors across Oʻahu from high school through college and on to careers and leadership positions in STEM disciplines.

They will also present information about the ʻIlima SACNAS chapter collaborative partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, Kalaeola Unit. Through this partnership, students participate in ʻaina-based science and conservation biology of endemic plants home to endemic animal species.
