Things Seen: Joseph Stanton Poetry Reading

Joseph Stanton, a professor of Art History and American Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, reads from his new book of art-inspired poems, just published this year by Brick Road Poetry Press. Stanton will read poems inspired by paintings, fairy tales, and noh plays. Stanton’s new book, Things Seen, was a finalist in a national competition and was published earlier this year by Brick Road Poetry Press. Early comments on the book include Ravi Shankar’s declaration that “Joseph Stanton’s Things Seen is one of the best books of poetry this year.” Things Seen is Stanton’s fifth book of poems and his second collection of art-inspired pieces. He regards it as a continuation of his 1999 book Imaginary Museum: Poems on Art. His research work also involves intersections of the literary and the visual, and, as a scholar, he has authored studies on Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak, Richard Howard, Donald Hall, Margaret Wise Brown, children’s picture books, artist-writer collaborations, ekphrastic poetry, and many other image/word topics.
At 4:30 on Sunday, September 11, Joseph Stanton will be giving a reading from his new collection at The Art Gallery at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. The reading is free, and parking is usually free on campus on Sundays.
