MFA alum ROBERT REED won three awards in 2014 at Manneqart a wearable art exhibition in Maryland. Robert tells us about the winning works.
RR: Auntie Organic: GMO picnic is an anthropomorphic queen ant with her hair made into a woven picnic basket. Her colony is attacking a picnic of genetically modified fruits and vegetables with tiny shopping carts. Incidentally this piece is currently on display at the Robinson Nature Center.
RR: Encapsulated is a time capsule that evolved from an installation I did at Northern Illinois University Art Museum using PVC pipes and a Foodsaver sealer. Fittingly this piece is on display at a Shopping Mall in Columbia.
RR: Finally Cyborg Cher is made from heating/air conditioning ductwork, tin and a aloha skirt. Cher was originally conceived in Hawai‘i for the exhibition "It's a (Wo)man's World" organized by another UHM alum Susan Callahan King. Cher was later displayed at Columbia Center of the Arts along with four small sculptures for Erase Hate Through Art. On this occasion I was also able to rework an earlier performance about hate crime.
