MODIFIED — an exhibition at Commons Gallery features the work of ten BFA students in ART466 (with Professor Chae Ho Lee). Each student has created unique alphabets inspired by astronomical phenomena, Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e), Jewish/German Blackletter, Hispanic textiles, low poly graphics, Maori Kowhaiwhai patterns and origami folds. Non-Latin alphabets were also created and inspired by Japanese handwritten menus, 17th century Russian scripts and combining an Armenian alphabet with Hawaiian petroglyphs. The exhibition includes a series of large format color posters displaying each alphabet as well as a specimen of the alphabet’s letterforms in use. Each student also presents their alphabets either lasercut into vibrant acrylics and exotic woods, printed onto fabric, folded into paper or carefully woven with thread into a typographic sculpture.
