MICHELLE SCHWENGEL-REGALA continues her presence in the ART Building, working on her upcoming exhibition HADAL ZONE at the Commons Gallery.

Michelle is an artist whose work is strongly influenced by her background in science. Her undergraduate degree and graduate studies were in entomology, wildlife ecology, and conservation biology, complementing her graduate certificate in Science Communication – Science Illustration from UC Santa Cruz.

She worked as a scientific and medical illustrator for more than 15 years before branching out into other types of art. Recently, she has coordinated local collaborative fiber projects including “Hook the Reef,” a crocheted coral reef project focusing on Hawaiian marine creatures, and numerous yarnbombing installations under the pseudonym “archiPURLago” with the crew “TheFUZZ.” The largest pieces have been at Spalding House in 2012 and 2014, while her signature tags of “spam knitsubi” are much smaller and are scattered around O‘ahu and beyond.

Michelle’s studio in the fiber classroom (364) M-F 8am to 1pm. Stop by any time to meet Michelle and her knitting machine. And maybe schedule a studio visit!
