The Art Gallery, Art Building, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
Jan Dickey is a painter, writer, and curator based in Brooklyn, New York. His work explores the intersections of making and organizing, treating curating as an extension of studio practice. He earned his MFA from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (2017) and his BFA from the University of Delaware (2009). Dickey has held residencies at TUR telpa (Rīga, Latvia), the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation (NY), ARTnSHELTER (Tokyo), the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center (NE), and the Vermont Studio Center (VT).
As a curator, Dickey organizes projects that sometimes hone in on ideas he explores as a painter and, at other times, pursue directions that feel like a poor fit for his personal studio practice. Recent projects include Prayer / Pattern / Prayer (Morgan Lehman Gallery, NY, 2025) and The Corner Show (D.D.D.D., NY, 2024). Recent and upcoming co-curations include Interisland at the UHM Art Gallery, with Debra Drexler and Liam Davis, and Why Paint? II at the Washington Studio School, with Reem Bassous. Dickey was also a founding member of GRRIC Contemporary, a student-run gallery and performance space in the UHM Department of Art & Art History.
