Joseph Maida presents his work and discusses his trajectory as an artist who has divided his time among New York City, Tokyo, and Honolulu. He also addresses the tension between traditional and contemporary identities and how the intersection of cultures informs his perspective and creative practice.

Joseph Maida is an artist based in New York City. His work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, the Bronx Museum of Art, Wallspace, Artist’s Space and Art in General, among others, and at international institutions including the Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid; the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdan; the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; and the Nikon Salons, Tokyo and Osaka. Maida’s work has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Japan – U.S. Friendship Commission and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. For the last decade, he has had teaching appointments at Yale University, the School of Visual Arts, SUNY Purchase, and Parsons, the New School for Design. Maida received his BA, summa cum laude, from Columbia University and his MFA from Yale University. He is represented by Daniel Cooney Fine Art.
