360 Degrees of Inclusive Workforce Development

Diversity, Culture, and Inclusion (DCI) Laha Seminar Series

Friday, September 8th, 12:00-1:00pm HST

Linda Akli, Director of Broadening Participation in Computing Institutional Initiatives, Texas Advanced Computing Center, University of Texas at Austin

Abstract: Holistic approaches to recruitment, selection, education, and workforce development programs many times place an emphasis on the student, faculty member, or institution that a program or organization wants to engage. Holistic approaches are important. However, looking only at your intended audience places a burden on them. Fully inclusive workforce development requires a systemic approach, world view, and assumption of responsibility by the program leadership and team. Linda Akli will discuss inclusive workforce development through a 360-degree lens and several exemplar programs that have demonstrated success in creating change when embracing this approach.

Joining TACC in May 2023, Linda serves as the Director of Broadening Participation in Computing Institutional Initiatives. She develops and manages innovative workforce development and broadening participation programs that engage the next generation of researchers in Advanced Computing. Prior to joining TACC, Linda was the Director for IT Initiatives at the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) where she was responsible for facilitating collaborative projects with SURA member institutions and leading groundbreaking workforce development and broadening participation programs for the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE).
