About the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO): GAO is an independent, nonpartisan agency that advises Congress about ways to make government more efficient, effective, ethical, equitable, and responsive. GAO provides Congress, the heads of executive agencies, and the public with timely, fact-based, non-partisan information that can be used to improve government and save taxpayers billions of dollars. GAO’s work helps to improve federal programs, operations, and vulnerable populations and covers issues a wide array of issues from education to healthcare to defense.
