Crack Whores, Body Fascists, Communitas, and Counter-Narrative
February 16, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 410
Communitas is an anthropological term referring to human kindness generated by people who undergo a state of liminal statuslessness, then emerge transformed and bonded together. This presentation looks at communitas as a culture-specific source of power that can be manipulated for destructive purposes, or can generate counter-narratives for the common good. When done for the benefit of humankind, communitas shatters the barriers between people by means of scandal, and can inspire those who are transformed to describe their experiences in terms of higher ethical and even spiritual awareness.
