“Law and Justice in Wu Yonggang and Wu Yigong’s film 'Evening Rain’ (1980)”

By Professor Alison Conner, UHM Richardson School of Law

Précis: This presentation will discuss ideas of law and justice in Evening Rain (1980), which was directed by Wu Yonggang (one of China’s greatest filmmakers) and Wu Yigong just after the Cultural Revolution. Like other examples of “scar cinema” Evening Rain depicts that era’s injustices, but unlike most films it focuses on the importance of law. It remains a beautiful and moving film and its message is still powerful today.

About the Speaker: Alison Conner is Professor of Law at the William S. Richardson School of Law, where she teaches courses on Chinese law. Her articles on law and film include “Images of Justice (and Injustice): Trials in the Movies of Xie Jin” (2013); “The Lawyer Who Haunts Us: Yin Zhaoshi and the Bright Day” (2014); and “Trials and Injustice in Awaara: A Post-Colonial Movie on Post-Revolutionary Screens” (2014).
