"LET THEM EAT DIRT: Saving our Children from an Oversanitized World".

Presentation by B. Brett Finlay, PhD

Peter Wall Distinguished Professor

Professor, Michael Smith Laboratories and the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Microbiology and Immunology

University of British Columbia

Dr. Finlay spent 30 years studying bacteria as something bad; now he and fellow researchers have turned their gaze to bacteria as something good – and essential to a child’s well-being. The study of microbes is an emerging science, and Let Them Eat Dirt introduces the latest research. Dr. Finlay will share key points from his book with Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta that provides evidence showing that our world of prescription antibiotics, antibacterial soaps, and hand sanitizers – all used to combat disease and encourage hypercleanliness – are also contributing to a steady increase in “diabetes, allergies, asthma, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), autoimmune diseases, autism, certain types of cancer, and even obesity.”

Lecture followed by discussion and reception. This event is free and open to all members of the healthcare community. Business casual or aloha attire. Space is limited; RSVPs required. RSVP online at http://www.nursing.hawaii.edu/deanslecture2017 by Saturday, February 4, 2017.
