Call for Proposals: Inaugural UHM First-Year Writing Symposium
February 7, 2017 - February 13, 2017Mānoa Campus, Online Submission
Exciting news: The UHM First-Year Writing program is planning its first-ever symposium! In preparation for this exciting event, Amanda Christie and I would like to request proposals and planning assistance.
The symposium will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, exact times and space TBD.
The theme of this symposium is: FYW HALLMARKS. We are asking that each proposal address this theme in some way, whether touching upon how a certain assignment relates back to a specific FYW hallmark, how a specific in-class activity interprets a specific FYW hallmark, or how a particular pedagogical theory or approach resists or interrogates a specific FYW hallmark or set of hallmarks. A list of the hallmarks can be found here as a helpful reference. If the embedded link to the hallmarks doesn’t work, here’s the URL: https://www.hawaii.edu/gened/foundations_FW.htm
Proposals for the event are now being accepted.
For this inaugural event, we are especially looking for proposals for the following types of sessions:
- A pedagogy paper (a paper presenting a specific pedagogical model or approach to the English 100 classroom)
- Assignment presentations (a presentation talking through the different facets of a specific assignment constructed for English 100)
- Teaching demonstrations (interactive modeling of actual in-class activities or approaches)
All sessions will be presented in hour-long panels with two presenters. Please, then, plan on about 20 minutes for your presentation so that there will be adequate time for questions and dialogue to follow.
To submit a proposal, please send an email to Todd Sammons at sammons@hawaii.edu or Amanda Christie at aa34@hawaii.edu. Please include in this email:
- Your name
- The type of session you are interested in
- An abstract (max 250 words): the abstract will be used as part of the program
- A list of keywords (5 maximum)
- Specific technology or other presentation requirements
Extended Deadline for proposal submissions is Monday, February 13, by midnight HST.
Also, we are also still looking for volunteers to help read abstracts and organize panels as well as assist on the day-of. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer as a planner or as a symposium-day volunteer (or both!), please email Todd Sammons at sammons@hawaii.edu or Amanda Christie at aa34@hawaii.edu by February 13th.
