2016 World Town Planning Day
Growing Local Agriculture in the Post-Plantation Era
Thursday, November 17th, 2016
5PM Pupus
6-8PM Program
In the last 30 years we have lost two-thirds of our intensive agricultural land use, witnessed a historic shattering of agricultural land ownership patterns, and have become embroiled in heated debates about how farmers and ranchers should conduct the business of agriculture in the future. What role does planning play in response?
This presentation features a statewide look at our current agricultural footprint and what it foretells about the shape of agricultural land use in the future. Where does our local food come from and how do we grow more to feed ourselves and contribute to healthy and vibrant rural communities?
Featured speaker Jeffrey Melrose has over 35 years of experience in land planning in rural Hawai‘i. He teaches planning at UH Hilo and is the primary author of both the American Planning Association award-winning Hawaii County Food Self-Sufficiency Baseline 2011 and the recently released Statewide Agricultural Land Use Baseline 2015 prepared for the Hawaii Dept of Agriculture
Commentators are UH Manoa Professors Kem Lowry (Urban Planning) and Krisna Suryanata (Geography)
