WRRC/'Ike Wai Water Seminar:

The 'Ike Wai Project: Securing Hawaiʻiʻs Water Future

Presented by Dr. Gwen Jacobs, Director of Cyberinfrastructure, University of Hawaii System

The ‘Ike Wai project, funded by a $20M award from the National Science Foundation EPSCoR program, addresses the grand challenge of water sustainability in Hawai'i. The mission of ‘Ike Wai is to ensure Hawai‘i’s future water security through the integration of research, education, and the engagement of community to develop a decision support system that improves water policy, planning, and stewardship for the State. Researchers, educators and students from UH Manoa and UH Hilo will conduct hydrological research with state agency partners to assess the current status, and predict future scenarios, for water availability in Hawai‘i. The project will leverage historical and traditional knowledge about water in Hawai‘i to inform research, policy, and resource management and will provide educational and training opportunities for the next generation of water resource professionals and policy makers.
