Thus far, classes and students have done ant collecting only on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Click on a link below to see some simple examples! From about 250 student collections thus far, students have located 26 species of ants, including two new species never before found in the islands, even by scientists! In addition, one student from Waiakea High School in Hilo located a new location for the little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata. This population was immediately eradicated, thanks to her help!
