Glenn Kalena Silva is a professor of Hawaiian language and former director of Ka Haka Ula O Keelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language at UH Hilo.
His peers describe him as a teacher first and foremost. He is regarded as a key member of a team that made the College of Hawaiian Language a reality.
His students learn through studying historical language resources, understanding the relevance of those materials, and relating these to contemporary times.
It’s also important for Silva’s students to understand the importance of viewing Hawaiian as a living and evolving language.
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students. The board also awards the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
