Description:
The 2018 National Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Conference.
The 2018 conference will be organized around the themes of indigenous knowledge, decolonization and socio-ecological resiliency in agroecology and sustainable food systems education. Demonstrating the university’s commitment to becoming the world’s foremost indigenous serving school, the conference will offer many unique opportunities to explore how the University of Hawai‘i, and other indigenous serving institutions in North America, are working to integrate traditional ecological knowledge, practice and culture into post-secondary food systems education. Through presentations, workshops, field trips and hands-on activities, participants will share their theory, practices and vision for integrating these topics into university level and adult education programming about food, agriculture, sustainability and justice. Description:
Hoʻōla ʻĀina O Māʻilikūkahi (“Hands Turned to the Soil”) –
Youth Food Sovereignty Congress.
The word ho‘ōla in Hawaiian means to restore, to give life. The name of the conference reflects an understanding that the ‘āina (land) must be healthy in order to feed us, and that ‘āina, kanaka and kaiāulu (land, people and community) must work in concert to provide and maintain sustenance for all living things. The youth sovereignty congress will be integrated into the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Conference and seeks to provide a platform from which community-oriented, intergenerational and cultural approaches to building a sustainable food system are honored, cultivated and launched.
