The Transformation of National Security in Asia
March 25, 12:00pm - 1:30pmMānoa Campus, Loulu Conference Room (Bachman Hall 107)
We are delighted to announce plans for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Center for Japanese Studies’ first U.S.-Japan Leaders in Residence program. We look forward to welcoming Mr. Glen S. Fukushima for meetings, talks, and classroom visits on our campus and in our community. Mr. Fukushima is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington D.C. and Vice Chair of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, the Former President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and the Former Deputy Assistant United States Trade Representative for Japan and China with a long and distinguished career in U.S. and Japan business and economic relations, Asian-Americans in politics, a supporter of higher education and the arts, and more. On Tuesday, March 25, Mr. Fukushima will share a conversation with Ms. Shannon Dorsey, U.S. State Department Diplomatic Fellow at the East-West Center on The Transformation of National Security in the Indo-Pacific. National security in the Indo-Pacific has changed significantly over the last decade, with the rise of China being the central focus of the United States, which has enhanced security ties with the Quad (Japan, Australia, India), South Korea, the Philippines, and others, including Europe. In addition to military assets, economic competitiveness has emerged as a critical component of national security. Where is the U.S.-China rivalry headed, and what is Japan’s role? We hope you can join us, reception to follow hosted by the JAIMS Endowment to Promote Global Leaders for Sustainable Futures, in collaboration with Fujitsu Limited and the College of Social Sciences.
