Community Dialogues ----------------- These are facilitated sessions where you can engage with peers from diverse backgrounds. People who participate in the Community Dialogues program will be able to: 1) Identify important aspects of their personal backgrounds, 2) Articulate the value of understanding different perspectives, 3) Describe and demonstrate principles of positive social engagement in communication, and 4) Understand about being responsible members of the Community. ----------------- “Exploring Love in Kālidāsa’s Kumārasaṃbhava and Today” with Kimberly Serratos -------------- Session: Join us for a heartfelt Community Dialogue as we explore the timeless love poem Kumārasaṃbhavam (“The Birth of Kumāra”) by the renowned fifth-century Sanskrit poet Kālidāsa. The conversation will begin with a reflection on the expressions of Pārvatī and Śiva’s divine love in the poem but quickly expand to include the many forms of love that shape our lives—from romantic to platonic and beyond. Together, we will share stories of meaningful relationships from other pieces of art or our lived experiences, weaving a web of connection akin to Indra’s net, where each thread reflects a unique and intertwined bond of love. ------- Speaker: Kimberly Serratos earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts and an M.A. in Eastern Classics from St. John's College. She is currently a Ph.D. student in Philosophy at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, specializing in aesthetics with a focus on contemporary feminisms and the Classical era, broadly construed. Focusing primarily on the Indian and Mediterranean traditions, her research explores the concepts of beauty and friendship and their intersection in art and life. --------- Sponsored by the Conflict and Peace Specialist
