ORE Seminar: Dynamics of Ice Floes: Exploring Wave Attenuation and Overwash

October 30, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Holmes Hall 243

In this talk, we will explore the interactions between ocean waves and ice floes using flexible plate models. Through a combination of experiments in a wave flume and simulations with LS-DYNA, we investigate how waves lose energy when interacting with ice floes and what happens when steeper waves trigger overwash — a phenomenon where water splashes onto the ice surface. Our data show that shorter waves lead to greater energy loss, while the overwash generates turbulence at the plate edges, increasing the stress at the edges of the ice which can lead to fragmentation. We also found that overwash alters the dynamic behavior of the ice floe, making it respond more rigidly. We validated our numerical models with physical experiments, strengthening confidence in our findings. This work not only helps us understand the dynamic behavior of sea ice but also has practical applications, like improving predictions for polar environments affected by climate change and guiding the design of offshore structures to ensure safe operations in these cold regions. // Jonas Behnen, ORE Graduate Student, The University of Hawaii at Mānoa // *In person and via Zoom* Meeting ID: 963 5962 3640 Passcode: OREseminar https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/96359623640
