Community Dialogues “Food for Thoughts” with Emi Obana ------ Session: Take a moment out of your busy day to reflect and rejuvenate your mind and spirit through engaging in a fruitful conversation over refreshments. Let’s connect and finish the semester strong together! ----- Speaker: Emi is a Ph.D. student in the Music Department at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. Emi holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz composition from Berklee College of Music and a master’s degree in educational leadership and societal change from Soka University of America Graduate School, and is passionate about exploring music’s power and potential to promote mutual understanding and peace. As a performer/composer, she has collaborated with various artists from different disciplines, countries, and languages, using her work to bring people together and promote cross-cultural communication. Emi is currently pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Resolution at the Matsunaga Institute of Peace concurrently with a PhD in Music composition. ----- Join us for a facilitated 90 minute session during which you can engage with peers from diverse backgrounds, learn more about the use of dialogue as an effective method of communication, and practice those skills with your peers. The activities will accentuate and strengthen your understanding of conflict management and their implications for involvement with the community. ----- The purpose of Community Dialogues is to help you develop personally and professional by 1) promoting an understanding of conflict management skills, 2) providing an opportunity for students to learn and practice skills that will help them better engage with other members of the Community; and 3) developing critical thinking skills. ----- People who participate in the Community Dialogues program will be able to: Identify important aspects of their personal backgrounds. Articulate the value of understanding different perspectives. Describe and demonstrate principles of positive social engagement in communication. Understand about being responsible members of the Community.
