A Transcendental Reading of the Mulamadhyamakakarika

March 12, 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, On Zoom

The Philoisophy Department Presents the Keith Whittingslow Graduate Essay Prize Winner, Thomas Schmidt Immanuel Kant and Nagarjuna are probably as far from one another as is possible, both in terms of their times and places and in terms of their philosophical projects. Nevertheless, the parallels between both thinkers have inspired modern interpreters to understand the thinking of one in terms of the other. Based on two contemporary views, however, I argue that such a parallel can only be of a formal nature. I examine in this presentation the difference between phenomena and noumena in Kant and between the conventional and the ultimate in Nagarjuna, which do not easily map onto each other.
