Nā One Hānau o Hōkūleʻa: Terrestrializing Cosmic Space in Hakipuʻu

March 5, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Windward Campus, Gallery ʻIolani

Ian Masterson, Coordinator of the Hawaiian Ocean Education Academy and WCC Anthropology Instructor, will discuss the significance of Hakipuʻu as the birthplace of the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa. Hakipuʻu is where the stars led voyagers coming up from the south, served as a resting place after their long voyage to Oʻahu from distant lands, and served as place where they could back sight their homeland while continuing to watch all the stars rise from the sea of Kai Koʻolau.
