The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race
October 14, 10:30am - 11:45am
Mānoa Campus, Crawford 105
Is race only about the color of your skin? Anthony Christian Ocampo shows that what "color" you are depends largely on your social context. Filipino Americans helped establish the Asian American movement, and the U.S. Census classifies them as Asian. But the legacy of Spanish colonialism in the Philippines means that they share many cultural characteristics with Latinos. Thus, Filipinos sense a connection with other racial groups. Amplifying the voices of second-generation Filipino Americans, Ocampo illustrates how his research participants articulate their shifting racial identities.
