Bollywood Mondays: 'Titli' (2014)

February 29, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Marine Sciences Building (MSB) 100

'Titli' (Butterfly) first debuted at Cannes in 2014, and was released in India in late 2015. At home and overseas, it scooped up a number of film festival awards and garnered widespread critical acclaim. The Hindustan Times called it "the best film of the year."

The movie follows Titli and his family, residents of a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Delhi. Oppressed and ignored by middle class India, the family turns to petty violence and crime in order to get by. When they marry off Titli to bring a woman into their gang, the new bride instead refuses to participate, provoking confrontations between Titli and his family.

The film powerfully forces viewers to confront the seamy margins of urban societies that they prefer to ignore. This is the third movie in the 15th UH Bollywood film series, running on occasional Monday afternoons this spring.
