The Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics and Swiss Academics of Hawaii Present: Tamara Albertini, Prof. of Philosophy @ UHM. TUNISIA'S ARDUOUS PATH TO DEMOCRACY: FROM JASMINE REVOLUTION TO ISLAMISM AND BACK
Tunishia is the birth place of the Arab Spring. It all began with a street vendor who set himself on fire in December 2010. What followed is a stunning path to democracy from revolution to the brink of civil war in 2013, after which four major Tunisian organizations began to mediate between Islamist and secularists camps and eventually saved the day. Not surprisingly, they were awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize! This talk will shed light on the ideas that informed all involved parties, in particular the reformist views of the 1st Salfiyya" in the 19th century.
