Traditional Hawaiian Dyes

This class will introduce Hawaiian native and Polynesian-introduced plants traditionally used to dye and decorate kapa.  Participants will tour the gardens to see important dye plants and learn how to identify and use them.  Students will each receive a piece of prepared kapa to dye and decorate.  Supplies are included in the cost of the class.  The instructor learned many of the Hawaiian dye preparations while studying with Beatrice Krauss at Lyon Arboretum, and has taught adult and children’s kapa dye classes in the community for many years.    $15 class fee includes the cost of materials and supplies for one person (if a parent is accompanying the child, the parent will also need to register)  The instructor will have additional pieces of kapa available for sale during the class. the class is designed for children grade 4 or older, and adults. class fee $15 per person. Registration required.
