CONSULTATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, MEETINGS You are invited to request consultations, presentations, and meetings with the visiting SENCER team members during the period 2/26-3/7

A team from SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) and its Center for Innovation SCI-West and National Center for Science and Civic Education will be in Hawaiʻi to consult and inspire higher education and in turn gather information about existing and new Hawaiʻi educational initiatives.

There will be opportunities to explore further work with SENCER, including team creation for participation in the 2015 SENCER Summer Institute, as well as proposal development for SENCER and NSF.

SENCER is NSF's leading initiative to reform undergraduate science education. It has received continuous funding from NSF since 2004 and is funded through 2017. SENCER applies the science of learning to the learning of science, all to expand civic capacity. SENCER courses and programs connect science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content to critical local, national, and global challenges - an approach that makes science more real, accessible, and civically important. SENCER supports a community of practice by offering faculty development programs through regional symposia and annual Summer Institutes, and supplement those interactions with a collection of resources. SENCER encourages and participates in the development of assessment strategies and tools that help educators better evaluate and promote student learning and engagement, as well as supports advanced research in these areas.

The SENCER Innovation team is interested in how higher education in Hawai'i is integrating SENCER principles and practices in both the natural and social sciences with a sharp focus on Native Hawaiian practices, culture and epistemology. From that focus came the idea of making Hawaiʻi a model state in the SENCER context.

As a first step, the SENCER Center for Innovation West; the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's College of Social Sciences and its Native Hawaiian Initiative team and Program for Civic Engagement; as well as the KCC-led, Hui o Moku interdisciplinary and inter-institutional Hawaiʻi SENCER team together host a faculty institute on Saturday 2/28/15 and regional meetings, consultations, presentations, and house calls during the period from February 26 to March 7, 2015.
