Community Dialogues, Ethical Photography for Social Change
September 5, 9:00am - 10:15amMānoa Campus, Academic Resource Center, Room 114
Community Dialogues ----------------- These are facilitated sessions where you can engage with peers from diverse backgrounds. People who participate in the Community Dialogues program will be able to: 1) Identify important aspects of their personal backgrounds, 2) Articulate the value of understanding different perspectives, 3) Describe and demonstrate principles of positive social engagement in communication, and 4) Understand about being responsible members of the Community. ----------------- “Ethical Photography for Social Change” with Wiwik Dharmiasih -------------- Session: A picture is worth a thousand words so the saying goes. But more-so, a picture presents the opportunity to convey a memorable moment through a static image. Photos, when told through story, can share a complex story in powerful ways. We will simulate these photovoices by using a photo as a medium for capturing an idea that is important to us. Bring a photo that is of significance to you. ---------- Speaker: Wiwik Dharmiasih is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She is currently a Graduate Assistant at The Matsunaga Institute for Peace, where she teaches Environmental Peacebuilding. Her research focuses on Political Geography, Conflict Transformation, and Community-based Natural Resources Management. She has also worked on climate change adaptation initiatives involving local perspectives of change and supported disaster risk reduction efforts, with a special focus on issues related to water equity, youth, and women. --------- Sponsored by the Conflict and Peace Specialist
