UH M?noa first launched Chinese studies in 1922 and since then has maintained collaborations with prestigious partners including Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University Tsinghua University, Sichuan University and others. The immense strength and reputation of our China programs are vital to UHM as a global research university. However, increasingly tense Sino-US relations threaten M?noa’s vibrant programs. Universities are being advised to exercise due diligence to protect national security, intellectual property, and competitiveness. The Chinese word for ‘crisis,’ ?? w?ij?, is comprised of two characters, one signifying ‘danger’ and the other a component of the term for ‘opportunity.’ In the words of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) Vice President Guohua YAN, “We can turn bad things into good things.” Thus, the College of Social Sciences seeks partners across UHM to advance a modern China Strategy while putting into place safeguard policies and protocols aimed at risk management. Konan will discuss existing cooperative agreements and international programs, and the increasingly complex national and international context.
