Abstract:
Academic institutions have long been distanced from environmental crises faced on the ground by citizens. Recent efforts to bridge the gaps show emerging patterns in effective models of community-engaged research and knowledge co-production. Using a case study in the Ohio River Valley, a heavily fracked region of the United States, and a number of other engagement efforts through the American Geophysical Union's Thriving Earth Exchange, I present results and best practices, as well as recent developments in creating novel opportunities for community-engaged work at Columbia University's Dept. of Earth and Environmental Science.
